This capstone paper mirrors a very common 11+ question style: identify the one grammatically correct sentence among four with errors, or name the word type (part of speech) of an underlined word. It pulls together everything — word classes, agreement, tense, apostrophes and homophones. Use the method below.

1 The 8 word classes (parts of speech)

Nouna person, place or thing — dog, London, joy
Verban action or being word — run, is, think

2 Naming an underlined word

Look at the job the word does in that sentence — the same word can be different classes in different sentences.

light: a bright light (noun) · light the candle (verb) · a light bag (adjective). ✓

Method: ask what it's doing here — naming, doing, describing, joining?

3 Finding the correct sentence

Check each option for errors in: capital letters, end marks, apostrophes, agreement, tense and spelling. The correct one breaks no rules.

How to crack these mixed questions

  1. Word type? Ask what job the underlined word does in THIS sentence.
  2. Try a swap test: a noun fits after 'the'; a verb fits after 'to'; an adjective fits before a noun.
  3. Correct sentence? Run the checklist: capitals, end mark, apostrophe, agreement, homophone, spelling.
  4. Eliminate any option with one clear error.
  5. The survivor is the correct sentence.

Adverb — describes 'ran' (Rule 1).
2. Word type of 'London' in 'We visited London'?
Noun (proper noun) — names a place (Rule 1).
